Designer Diaper Bags – Are They Worth The Investment?

Designer diaper bags aren’t something most people even know exist. But if you’re a high-end fashionable mama, you’re probably already in the know. Maybe you already have one, or perhaps you’re dreaming of the perfect brand name bag to carry all of your baby things in. You could even be in the larger percentage of ordinary people who had no idea there was such a thing out there.

Either way, I’m here to talk a little about these high-end baby bags.

Until a couple of months ago, I had no idea designer diaper bags was a thing either. Did I know about designer handbags? Yes. Do I even own a couple of them? Perhaps. Had I ever considered that I would need or want one for my baby’s things? No. Do I love the fact that high-end designers are catering to new moms? Absolutely.

This has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me.

So I’m here today to give you a little insight into what a designer diaper bag is, What makes them so unique, The price tag attached to the name and how to know if going down the designer diaper bag route is right for you. Lastly, I will give my opinion on whether I think they’re worth the investment.

What Is a Designer Bag?

Designer bags typically refer to handbags or purses that are made using luxury material and in the most modern designs and patterns. They are often hand stitched and crafted from the finest materials.

Some high-end lines include; Coach, Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Gucci, to name a few. Though these brands primary focus is on handbags, they all have another thing in common; they have high-end diaper bags to offer as well. Designer diaper bags have been around since 2005, starting with brands like Kate Spade, Coach and Ralph Lauren. According to Fortune in 2006, “To gain an edge, smart manufacturers are doing whatever it takes to capture the attention (and aesthetics) of today’s chic parents-to-be who are willing – sometimes even eager – to pay top dollar for products that seamlessly blend fashion and function.”

But what makes these bags so desirable?

The Advantages Over The Competition

The main things that make these diaper bags stand out from the rest are the material and craftsmanship.

When purchasing a designer diaper bag from a designer label, you get the same excellent quality as their handbags. For anyone who has owned or held a designer handbag, you know what I’m talking about. The soft, supple leather and new handbag smell send me off to daydream land every time. My Husband thinks I’m a little bit nuts when it comes to designer bags, but that’s OK, he isn’t entirely wrong.

Anyway, back to the subject. Here are some things that make them stand out from the ordinary diaper bag;

Material: Designer bags are created with the finest of leathers or tightly woven canvas. You can expect the same excellent materials in their diaper bags as well.

Hand Crafted: The title sort of speaks for itself. Designers are known for their hand carted bags that are made to stand the test of time. Everything right down to the handles, buckles and straps are top quality to stand up against normal use.

Style and Fashion: The designer diaper bags are not only functional they are made with style in mind. They are designed to follow current fashion trends to entice chic mothers to continue their fashionista ways in motherhood.

Name: What is in a name? Aside from all the other things I have told you about, bragging rights. If you care about making your peers jealous of your luxuriousness, then brand names are probably important to you. I don’t put a lot of stock into brand names but purchase the things I like regardless of the name.

Warranty: Many Brands, such as Michael Kors, offer a limited warranty on their bags. These warranties are usually for one year, but you will have to look up the brand you’re interested in to see if they provide a product warranty.

The Price Tag That Comes With The Name

As the old saying goes, ‘you get what you pay for.’ When it comes to diaper bags, high end also comes with an equally high price tag. The cost of designer diaper bags range from $200-300 on the low end and upwards of $3000 on the high end. The majority of designer diaper bags out there will be under $500. Still, less than 500 for a designer bag is a pretty great deal, depending on the brand of course.

Dollar SignsIf you plan to use the bag for a long time, the price will wash out in the end and save you money in the long run.

Look at it this way; You plan to be using a diaper bag for at least 5 years. You buy a cheap diaper bag for $40, That diaper bag will likely need to be replaced within 6 months due to the low quality. Over 5 years, you will need to replace that cheap bag 10 times, which ends up being $400 over the 5 years.

Now, Imagine that you decided to go with the designer diaper bag from the beginning for $500, this is a bit above the average price. You will still have that same diaper bag at the end of the 5 years and will likely be in relatively good condition unless you abused the thing. So, your 5 years is up, and you decide that you don’t want to use the bag for yourself but it’s in good condition.

What do you do now?

Well, now you can turn around and sell the same bag on a Buy/Sell/Trade site or forum. Most designer bags can be resold for 50-75% of their retail value, depending on the condition. Let’s say you sell it for 50% of the cost, you now have $250 back in your pocket.

Let’s quickly recap.

With the cheap bag at the end of the 5 years, you’re out $400 and nothing else to show for it except another bag ready for the Garbage.

Meanwhile, when the 5 years are up with the designer bag, you’ve spent only $250 after you sold the bag and never had to worry about replacing it once in those 5 years.

When it’s broken down like that, the choice seems pretty obvious, doesn’t it?

Is a Designer Diaper Bag Right For You?

You’ve come this far, and you’re still not sure if a designer diaper bag is right for you? This is not a decision to be taken lightly. It’s perfectly OK to take your time before deciding to make one the most significant purchases for your baby’s things.

If you’re still on the fence you can ask yourself the below questions to help you figure it out:

  1. Do you have a long-term plan for using a diaper bag?
  2. Do you feel that the price tag is worth the investment?
  3. Is it in your budget?
  4. Do you love the design, colour, size and functionality of a particular bag?
  5. Will you use it or will it sit in your closet?
  6. Do you want to use the same bag for years or replace it frequently?
  7. Do you value fashion and style?

If you’ve answered yes to all the above questions, you may want to consider a designer diapers bag as an option.

Worth the Investment?

After taking everything I have written into careful consideration, do I think that designer diaper bags worthy of the investment? In my opinion, yes. But only if your budget allows for it.

Here’s why.

Brand name aside, you’re paying for quality and in most cases warranty. Owning a designer diaper bag isn’t only about looking good or bragging rights, it’s about investing in something you will be using for a long time. And once you’re done using it as a diaper bag, it will make a great oversize handbag with lots of pockets for organizing. If you decide that you don’t want to use it past the baby days, you can turn around and sell it on a Buy/Sell/Trade site for 50-75% of the original ticketed price.

With all investments, do your research first. You want to be sure the one you choose is the right one for you. After all, you’re probably going to be using it for a long time to come.

I wish you good luck in your designer search and have fun looking at all the fabulous diapers bags.

My wife and I have a young one at home. She has been begging me to spend all this money on some diaper bag she found online. I told her it wasn’t worth the money. In doing my research I came across your tips.

I think that maybe the pros of getting a really nice expensive bag outweigh the cons. I surely want something that will last for my wife as to not replace it every other year.

    Thanks for helping us out!

Not technically designer, but I got a Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag with my first and now two kids later it is still holding up well and I plan to use it for any future ones. Designer can be pricey in the beginning but as you said, they are usually worth it. Thanks for the article!

    1. Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bags are definitely some of the better quality bags. They aren’t ‘designer’ but in the diaper bag world, they are up there pretty high. Thanks for your comment!
