Portable Diapering Stations

My Baby InsiderWhat can be better than a diaper changing station that can travel with you? Not much when you have little ones while on the move. If you don’t have any kids and still need a portable diaper changing station while you’re out. Well, let’s just say that I probably can’t help you with that and you should seek some medical advice.

Never heard of portable diaper changing stations? no problem! I’m here to give you the ins and outs of them to help you decide if you would benefit from having one.

What is a portable diaper changing station?

A portable diapering station is exactly what it sounds like. It is a folding changing pad attached to a portable bag with pockets for holding your diapering essentials.

Most changing pads are detachable from the rest of the carrying case.My Baby Insider There are usually several internal pockets on the carry case. Most likely they will be mesh, but some brands also have a handy wet pocket to store wet items.

You can also find some with an external zippered pocket. This is really handy to use for items you need to access frequently such as hand and face wipes.

The case will also have a carrying handle with either Velcro or snaps so that you can easily attach it to your diaper bag or stroller.

My Baby InsiderI would say the biggest benefit to toting around this diapering station is that you have all of your diapering essentials all in one place. It’s great to grab to run a quick errand without having to drag the whole diaper bag with you.

Diapering in public will get a lot easier: No more fumbling to find what you need in your diaper bag. No more juggling the baby, change pad, diapers, wipes, creams, and any other items you use on a regular basis, all at the same time. Does it get much better than that? It sure does, keep reading.

In the event of a diapering emergency, aka poop blow out, having everything you need at your fingertips is a blessing. It’s especially convenient if the portable changing station is hanging on your stroller, no need to go looking in your diaper bag. You can even keep an extra change of clothes in one of the change station pockets for such occasions.

I find that my husband is more willing to do the public diaper changes when all the diapering needs are together and easy to access. He hates digging through the diaper bag to find what he needs, and anything that encourages him to take over parenting duties more is terrific in my books.

My Baby InsiderAlthough I’m a huge fan of these stations, there is one drawback.

Since these diapering stations can be on the large side, they can be difficult to fit inside your diaper bag. Unless you carry a huge diaper bag like a Jujube Be Prepared or a Soyoung Charlie, you will have to either clip it to the outside of your diaper bag or stroller. It can be a bit of a hassle to have another item to keep track of when out and about.

Alternative Solutions

Using packing pouches is a really common way to organize your diaper bag. It’s the same idea as the portable diapering station; you keep all your similar items packed together in the same pouch. An advantage to doing it this way is that the packing pouch is much smaller and will comfortably fit in most diaper bags. A disadvantage would be that you likely won’t be able to fit a changing pad in the pouch as well unless you pack some small disposable ones. So if you like to keep it all in your diaper bag, this may be an excellent option for you.Itzy Ritzy Tribe Tote InsideThe most comm way that people pack their diapering needs would be to utilize the pockets of your diaper bag. Also, great if you want to keep everything in your bag. But, you will have to dig out all of the individual items for each public diaper change. This can be a hassle at times, especially when there is a blowout and the poop is everywhere. There’s a high chance the poop will get inside your bag in this situation.
