How to Clean Your Ju-Ju-Be Diaper Bag

My Baby InsiderAre you in love with the Ju-Ju-Be brand? I know I sure am! This brand has quickly become my new favourite. I currently have two JuJuBe diaper bags, another presently on the way, and a bunch of their packing accessories.

In my opinion, this is the most durable and versatile brand for diaper bags on the market. They can be a bit on the pricey side, but they are worth every penny. My only regret is that I didn’t know about them with my first child so I could use them for even longer.

If you don’t know who Ju-Ju-Be is, you need to get in the know right now!

A Little About Ju-Ju-Be

JuJuBe was founded in 2005 by Joe Croft and Kristin Hunziker. The company is based in Costa Mesa, California. Joe and Kristin met at Oakley and worked together in the apparel and shoe departments.

Joe was thinking of starting up a bag company but had no idea that it was going to be diaper bags. He and Kristin got to talking and figured they could add quite a bit of expertise to the diaper bag industry. A friend of his introduced him to the top management for Babystyle and private label bags was going to be made for them as a side project. One thing led to another and Ju-Ju-Be turned into a big deal. Today Ju-Ju-Be is a diaper bag and accessories line with a large variety of products that are eco-friendly and created with parents and kids in mind. They have won numerous awards over the years with the latest ones being the 2017 Family Choice Award, LABaby show pick for Bloggers Favorite and the 2017 What to Expect Mom Must-Have award.

Cleaning your Ju-Ju-Be

All Ju-Ju-Be products are made with Teflon® fabric protector on the outside fabric which repels stains and sheds water. They also have an Antimicrobial coated lining of Agion® which protects the liner by inhibiting the growth of odour-causing bacteria, mould and mildew.

My Baby InsiderBecause of the thought and care that has gone into the treated fabric, this allows Ju-Ju-Be products to be machine washable. However, you do need to follow some specific instructions to ensure your bag comes out in the same condition as it went in.

Since not every mess will require a machine wash, I have put together the steps I use for spot cleaning, deep cleaning, removing odours, machine washing, and changing pad cleaning. I’ve also added some additional tips that will maximize your Ju-Ju-Be life and cleaning experience.

Just be sure to remember this one unwavering rule: NEVER put your Ju-Ju-Be bag in the dryer.

Spot clean

Spot cleaning is great for localized stains. Most of the time all you will need is a quick spot clean to revive your bag.

What you will need:

  • My Baby InsiderJu-Ju-Be bag and accessories to spot clean
  • Saline wipes
  • Oxi-Clean Laundry Stain Remover spray
  • Toothbrush
  • Clean towel or rag

Spot Cleaning Option 1:

  1. Use the saline wipes to wipe the stain
  2. Let air dry

If this does not take out the stain, try option 2.

Spot Cleaning Option 2:

  1. Spray the stain on your Ju-Ju-Be with the Oxi-Clean Laundry Stain Remover spray
  2. Wait 5 minutes
  3. Use the toothbrush to scrub the treated area
  4. Wipe the Oxi-Clean Laundry Stain Remover off with the clean towel or rag

For more stubborn stains you may need to do a deep clean, machine wash or both.

Deep clean

When a spot cleaning just isn’t enough, you may want to consider a deep clean. I suggest doing a deep clean at least once a year, or sometimes more depending on how much you use the bag. Deep cleaning is great for an overall cleaning and extra stubborn stains

What you will need:

  • My Baby InsiderJu-Ju-Be bag and accessories you want deep cleaned
  • Blue Dawn dish soap
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Baking Soda
  • Toothbrush
  • Mixing Cup
  • Oxi-Clean stain fighter powder
  • 1 large and deep tub OR a large and deep sink. Preferably use a sink in your laundry room.

Pre-treat:

You can use the Spot Cleaning Option 2 as a pre-treat, but if that doesn’t work, follow the steps below for a more pre-treat pre-treat cleaning.

  1. Empty your Ju-Ju-Be bag of all its contents.
  2. Unzip all the pockets checking for items.
  3. Give your bag a good shake upside down in case you missed something
  4. Take the mixing cup, add 1/4 cup each of the blue dawn, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda
  5. Stir with the toothbrush until thoroughly mixed
  6. Use the paste and toothbrush to scrub the stains on your Ju-Ju-Be bag
  7. Once you are done scrubbing, rinse the bag thoroughly under warm running water to get out all the paste. This step may take a couple of rinses depending on how much paste you used.

Next, move onto the deep cleaning steps.

Deep Clean:

Once your pre-treat is complete, you can do the following deep clean steps.

  1. Take your large tub and place it somewhere it can easily be filled and drained. I suggest putting it in your bathtub.
  2. Fill the tub or sink with enough lukewarm water to fully emerge your bag into
  3. Take your Oxi-Clean stain fighter powder and use the provided measuring cup to measure the soap
  4. Put the measured soap into the tub.
  5. Submerge your Ju-Ju-Be into the water fully
  6. Knead the bag for 10-15 minutes or until all dirt has come out of the bag
  7. Let the bag sit in the water, fully submerged, for 3-4 hours
  8. If your bag is still dirty, change out the water and repeat the deep clean process as many times as you need.

You can now do one of three things:

  1. Hang the bag up to air dry
  2. Follow the instructions for removing odours
  3. Follow the instructions for a machine wash

I usually do a machine wash after a deep clean to ensure all the Oxi-Clean soap is removed from the bag. You will especially want to do a machine wash if you did an odour treatment, you don’t want it to smell like vinegar instead.

Removing Odors

Before following the steps to remove unwanted odours, you will want to use one of the pre-treat options above or do a deep clean. Possibly even do both the pre-treat and deep clean before the odour remover. Since the bag is already going to get soaking wet, why not do the whole deep clean routine.

What you will need:

  • 1 large jug of Vinegar
  • 1 large and deep tub OR a large and deep sink. Preferably use a sink in your laundry room.

Pre-treat:

  • Follow the pre-treat and deep clean steps listed previously

Odor Removing:

  1. Take your large tub and place it somewhere it can easily be filled and drained. I suggest setting it in your bathtub.
  2. Place your Ju-Ju-Be in the empty tub
  3. Dump the entire jug on the bag
  4. Let the bag sit in the vinegar until the odour is gone

Once the order is gone, make sure to do a machine wash on the bag to get the vinegar smell out.

Machine Wash

My Baby InsiderAll Ju-Ju-Be bags are machine washable, even the

What you will need:

  • Ju-Ju-Be bag and accessories you want deep cleaned
  • Oxi-Clean laundry detergent
  • 2 small mesh laundry bags with zippers
  • 1 large mesh laundry bag with a zipper
  • Towel

Pre-treat:

Use Spot Cleaning options 1 and 2, the deep clean process or the odour removing instructions as your pre-treat options.

Machine Wash:

  1. Empty your Ju-Ju-Be bag of all its contents.
  2. Unzip all the pockets checking for items.
  3. Give your bag a good shake upside down in case you missed something
  4. Remove all straps and place them in the small zippered laundry bags
  5. After you complete one of your chosen pre-treat options, put your Ju-Ju-Be bag in the large zippered laundry bag
  6. Place your bag and accessories in the washing machine.
    1. For Top load washers, place the bag upside down to ensure it doesn’t fill with water
    2. For a front load washing machine, place the bag face down with the top opening pointed toward the back of the machine.
  7. Place you Oxi-Clean laundry detergent in your machine and set it to the gentle or delicate cycle.
  8. When the washing machine stops, take all items out and remove them from the mesh laundry bags
  9. Wipe the diaper bag down with the dry towel and hang up to air dry.
    1. You can turn the diaper bag inside out when placing in the sun to dry; this will minimize fading to the exterior fabric
  10. Wring any excess water out of the accessories and hang to dry.

Never place your Ju-Ju-Be diaper bag or accessories in the dryer, they are air dry only.

Changing Pad

My Baby InsiderThe cleaning process for your changing pad is the same as for your diaper bag. You can follow any of the above processes depending on the stains and type of cleaning you want.

After you changing pad will be full of air after washing it. Fold it up and press down to restore it to its natural shape. In humid weather, it can take a long time to dry. Start by squeezing as much water out as you can and if possible, dry it in the sun-satin side up.

I know I’ve told you several times that you should never put your Ju-Ju-Be in the dryer. However, if you need extra help on those humid days, you can throw the damp changing pad in the dryer on the lowest setting for a very short time.

Additional Tips

In addition to the cleaning processes, I have listed some tips for you to remember when giving your Ju-Ju-Be a good cleaning.

  • Remember your Ju-Ju-Be was made to be washed, so don’t be afraid to get right in there and give it a good scrub.
  • If the gems come off, they can be glued back on.
  • Ju-Ju-Be recommends a product made by SHOUT called Color Catchers for any of their brighter coloured linings.
  • You can use a pillowcase to put your diaper bag and accessories in when machine washing if you don’t have any mesh laundry bags. Just make sure you keep the accessories in a separate pillowcase from the diaper bag.
  • Have an ink stain? Carefully try rubbing alcohol or hairspray.
  • Ju-Ju-Be does not suggest machine washing the Be Rich or the Be Tagged, as they contain a stiffener that tends to degrade with water immersion. Spot clean please, machine wash at your own risk.
